    📌 What you’ll learn

    1. 3 reasons your brightening serum doesn’t seem to work
    2. How to find brightening ingredients on the ingredient list
    3. Why you need to use it for at least one to two months
    4. Why skipping sun protection means wasted effort

You bought a brightening serum and used it faithfully for two weeks, but when you look in the mirror you think: “Hmm, no difference leh?” Is the product useless, or is the method wrong?

When brightening skincare doesn’t seem to work, the usual reasons come down to three: the wrong ingredients, not enough time, and poor sun protection. Today I’ll explain them all, and help you set more realistic expectations.

Reason 1: The ingredients may not be right

Not every product that says “brightening” contains ingredients that help inhibit melanin. Before buying, turn it over and look at the ingredient list. Common brightening ingredients include:

    Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate
    Common label nameMagnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate
About itA more stable vitamin C derivative
    Ethyl vitamin C
    Common label name3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid
About itA vitamin C derivative with good stability
    Tranexamic acid
    Common label nameTranexamic Acid
About itA common brightening ingredient that helps inhibit melanin formation
    Arbutin
    Common label nameArbutin
    About itA common brightening ingredient

Just check two things: whether the list has this kind of ingredient, and where it sits on the list. For how to read an ingredient list, see “Is expensive skincare always better?“.

Reason 2: Not giving it enough time

Brightening ingredients mainly work by helping to inhibit melanin formation. But melanin that is already there has to follow the skin’s natural renewal, slowly moving up to the surface and then shedding off.

This process takes time, and the older we are, the slower it usually is. So expecting an obvious change after one or two weeks is not very realistic. Keep using it for at least one to two months before judging — that is more reasonable.

You can pair it with products that help skin renewal

Some people pair it with products that help skin renewal, such as those with retinol or fruit acids. But these ingredients are more irritating, so start with low strength and low frequency, watch how your skin reacts, and always use sunscreen in the day.

For how to use retinol, see “What is Morning C, Night A?“; for how to tell irritation from allergy, see “Is peeling or stinging from skincare normal?“.

Reason 3: Without proper sun protection, it’s wasted effort

UV rays are one of the main triggers of melanin. Applying brightening serum faithfully at night but not protecting from the sun in the day is like mopping the floor while leaving the door open for people to walk mud in — you’ll never finish.

We live near the equator, where the sun is strong all year round, and there is UV even on cloudy days. Going to the pasar, waiting for the bus, walking to the kopitiam for coffee — ten or twenty minutes here and there add up to a lot. Singapore’s NEA publishes the UV index every day, so you can check before going out.

My sun protection habitEvery morning, I make sun protection the last step of my skincare. When outdoors, remember to reapply regularly, add a hat and umbrella, and walk in the shade.

    Realistic expectations for brightening skincare

    • Brightening means a more even skin tone and less dullness, not turning your natural skin colour into a different one.
    • It takes time: judge it in “months”, not “days”.
    • Sun protection is more basic than brightening serum: without it, all your other efforts are discounted.
When should you see a doctor? If a spot appears suddenly, gets bigger, or changes in colour or shape, or it is a stubborn pigmentation problem like melasma, please let a dermatologist check it first. Don’t rely only on skincare to handle it yourself. For why spots come back easily, see “Do faded dark spots come back?“.
    Derrick’s suggested pairing
    • No.4 White Radiance Cream: No.4 is a morning brightening step with tranexamic acid, plus brightening ingredients such as arbutin, glabridin and vitamin C phosphate. Mix it with 9A when applying, and you can apply extra on spots and areas of pigmentation.
    • Rejuvenating C Powder: C Powder has two brightening ingredients, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and tranexamic acid, suitable for those who want to work more on dullness. Make sure your hands are dry, and close the lid tightly right after use.
    • 6A Multi-Effect Brightening Protection Cream: Brightening must go with sun protection. 6A is a moisturising SPF20, suitable for going to work, buying groceries and fetching the kids every day; for long hours outdoors, use SPF30 or above, plus a hat and umbrella.
    • 6B Whitening Repair Sun Cream: 6B is a light SPF25 with a tint. People with oily skin who don’t want to wear makeup tend to like it more, and it can also be layered over 6A.

Products aren’t a must. Choose based on your own skin; if you’re not sure, ask me first.

    Final words

If your brightening product doesn’t seem to work, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s useless. First check the ingredients, give yourself enough time, then get your sun protection right — usually you will slowly see your skin tone change.

    FAQ

Q: How long before I can see results from a brightening serum?

Keep using it for at least one to two months before judging, together with daily sun protection. The older we are, the slower our skin renews, so it usually takes longer.

Q: Can I apply brightening products at night and skip sunscreen in the day?

No. UV keeps increasing melanin. Without sun protection in the day, no matter how much you apply at night, the results will be discounted.

Q: My spot just won’t fade. Should I switch to a stronger product?

Don’t rush to switch. If the spot’s colour or shape changes, or you suspect a stubborn pigmentation problem like melasma, please see a dermatologist first.
